Can You Build Your Own Fire?
5/1/2007

Meditation Moment

Can you build your own fire?  (I Sam. 30:6)

“…But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.”

Have you ever wondered why we can be so high in the Spirit on Sunday and yet fall so quickly on Monday?  It is quite simple – we have not learned to build our own fire.  I am reminded of an event in the life of the prophet Elijah in which he sought to prove to God’s people that the Lord God of Israel was the one true God (I King 18:20-39).  He challenged the prophets of Baal (the hottest idol in Israel) to a “holy war” of sorts.  Elijah built an altar, after which he issued a simple challenge; “you call on your god and I will call on my God.  And the god that answers by fire, He is God” (paraphrase cf. I Kings 18:24).  The prophets of Baal prayed and wailed all night long – unfortunately no fire.  Elijah prayed a short prayer and immediately, fire from heaven consumed the altar.  God provided the fire.  The people were inspired and restored back to the Lord.

There will be times when you cannot see your way that God will build a fire for you to inspire your heart and to lighten your path.  The fire will draw you out of the worst form of sin and apostasy.  It will comfort you through your worst midnight.  It will inspire you with the strength to take another step.  Just as God reignited the faiths of his people through the prophet Elijah, he is faithful and merciful to reignite your heart.  God, however, chooses to use those sacred moments to teach you the fundamental need for fire.  Sadly, the people of Israel fell back into idolatry because they failed to learn to build their own altars and fires to God.  We do the same.  God uses your memorable “fire from heaven” experiences to move you to building your own fire.  Even Abraham, a man known as “a friend of God” (James 2:23 cf. 2 Chr. 20:7, Is. 41:8), did not walk in the purposes of God until he learned to build his own fire (Gn. 12:7, 8, 13:4, 13:18).  This is what David learned in his darkest moment.  He learned to build his own fire: “but David strengthened himself in the Lord his God”.  God knows we need the fire.  He will build it for you.  He wants you to learn, however, that you can build a fire too.
